Vocal Coach and Singing Teacher- What's the Difference?
There's a difference between singing lessons and vocal coaching- and at Studio 21, you get both, fully integrated into every session. Singing lessons focus on the technical foundations of the voice: breath management and support, posture and alignment, resonance and placement, tone production, pitch accuracy, and the development of range across registers. Students develop a thorough understanding of how their voice works- including the mechanics of the vocal folds, the role of the breath in phonation, and how to navigate the passaggio with control and consistency. This technical grounding is what builds a voice that is reliable, healthy and capable of meeting the demands of performance.
Vocal coaching takes that foundation and shapes it into artistry. This is where music theory, lyric analysis, character study and stylistic interpretation come into play- developing the ability to communicate meaning, emotion and intention through song. Coaching also addresses the specific demands of musical theatre styles, including belt technique, mix voice, speech-level approaches and stylistic authenticity across different repertoire periods.
Underpinning everything is a commitment to vocal health. Students learn how to warm up and cool down correctly, how to manage their voice under performance pressure, and how to build sustainable long-term technique- avoiding the habits that lead to strain, fatigue or injury. Every session draws on all of this- technical training, performance craft and vocal wellbeing- developing singers who don't just sound good, but who understand their voice and know how to use it.
